Lyttelton’s Boyd Cottages, on the corner of Winchester and Oxford Streets, has been gutted by flames.
Tenants of two fire-damaged social housing units in the Christchurch port suburb of Lyttelton are safe and well after an early-morning blaze. Emergency services were called to a fire at Boyd Cottages on the corner of Winchester and Oxford Streets at 5am on Sunday. One house was “well ablaze” when fire crews arrived, but they were able to extinguish the blaze by 7.30am. There was extensive damage to the house, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said, and a fire investigator was on the scene to ascertain the cause.

In the second of three investigations, STEVEN WALTON talks to residents and decision-makers about where social housing is built and why. Zhane Neho, a mother to two daughters aged 3 and 5, says Aranui can be a harsh place to live. A lot of “random stuff” happens. “You can hear yelling out on the street,” she says. “Or one time we’ve had gunshots out here and, you know, I was in the kitchen cooking.”
