Rivera worked with the Plainview ISD PD since the department was established in 2019. Prior to that, he worked as a Hale County Sheriff’s deputy. Rivera was a former Plainview ISD school board member and a former member of the Hale County Housing Authority. In a statement from the school district provided to The Herald, Rivera is described as a “good man, a great friend, an amazing father and a loving husband.” He is also characterized as a “true friend.” “He was always one to give and never to take,” reads the statement from the district. “He would rather support others in their need while looking past his own. Officer Rivera was a man of sound character with a giving spirit and pure heart. He loved the students he protected, enjoyed the company of PISD educators and respected the peers with whom he served.”

There will be a procession for Rivera in Plainview Thursday afternoon followed by an Honor Guard and a graveside funeral around 3:30 p.m. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. The procession will begin at Bartley’s Funeral Home located on I-27 and proceed down the north access road to 5th Street, then turn down Joliet Street to the Plainview Cemetery.
