HOLLAND (WHTC-AM/FM) Each week, WHTC hears from editors at The Lakeshore, an online-only publication focused on good things happening in Allegan, Ottawa and Muskegon counties. Here are some of the highlights of their conversation for the week of April 16, 2021.
Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year: Nayeli Mora ‘s essay on how she overcame bullying and embraced her culture. Mora was bullied in elementary and middle school as she struggled to learn English. As the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland’s 2021 Youth of the Year, she hopes to use her voice and her story to make a difference in her generation and inspire her peers to advocate for themselves.

Grand Rapids Community College leaders are reviewing how to use a nearly $10 million donation to support student resources and modernize facilities.
The donor, Robert Richmond, passed away in 2019.
“This is an extraordinary and generous investment in GRCC, its students and our greater community,” GRCC President Bill Pink said. “Mr. Richmond saw firsthand how GRCC gave his employees the knowledge and confidence to grow and thrive. His gift will help us continue providing state-of-the-art learning spaces and other resources to make education more accessible to West Michigan residents.”
Richmond started his career with IBM, helping businesses set up computer systems. He and his wife Lois started B&L Plastics in Rockford and, later, B&L Development, where they hired interns from GRCC.
