Farmers trial solutions to commonly breached pollution rules

Unchecked livestock access to watercourses can lead to a breach of regulations and financial penalties
Alternative watering systems, including solar-powered water troughs, have been trialled by livestock farmers as a way of complying with diffuse pollution regulation.
Scottish farmers are developing four cost-effective, practical solutions to the most commonly breached diffuse pollution regulation - General Binding Rule 19.
Autumn and early winter are important times for managing diffuse pollution - as rainfall increases and green cover diminishes, the risk of leaching, poaching and erosion rises.
Through the Farming and Water Scotland initiative, SAC Consulting, part of Scotland s Rural College (SRUC), has been working with farmers to develop the solutions.

A University Park police sergeant was found dead Thursday at Lake Tawakoni, about 60 miles east of Dallas, a day after he was reported missing.
Robert Ramsey, a 12-year veteran of the department, had gone for a duck hunting trip and did not return Wednesday, police said.
The department said Ramsey s boat was found adrift about five miles away from the launch site later in the day but that it was unoccupied and he was nowhere to be found. Texas State Game Wardens and the West Tawakoni Police Department began conducting search and rescue efforts at the lake Wednesday afternoon but suspended those efforts overnight.
Ramsey s body, police confirmed, was found and recovered at about 11:20 a.m. Thursday. University Park police said the circumstances into how Ramsey ended up in the water are not known.
University Park Chief Greg Spradlin said in a statement that he s known Ramsey for several decades and that he was a credit to the profession of law enforcement. He said Ramsey was the city s employee of the year in 2018, was an avid hunter and loved the outdoors.
