SARASOTA COUNTY – Four Sarasota area hospitals earned A grades in the latest hospital report cards released by the rating organization the Leapfrog Group Thursday.
Lakewood Ranch Medical Center and Manatee Memorial Hospital both earned B grades. Blake Medical Center earned a C, as did Bayfront Health Port Charlotte and Bayfront Health Punta Gorda in Charlotte County. Hospitals with a consistent pattern of protecting patients from errors, accidents and injuries, like these straight A hospitals, seem to have been more prepared when the pandemic hit, Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in a prepared statement. For many, safety and quality are embedded in their daily work at all levels of the organization, which prepared them in turn to respond to the rapidly evolving pandemic.
MUNCIE, Ind. The cause of a Monday night fire in an apartment building near the Ball State University campus remains under investigation.
The blaze displaced more than 70 occupants of the four-story building most recently known as The District at 1200 W. Bethel Ave. Those living in the apartment included Ball State University students and local residents and families.
Robert Mead, chief investigator for the Muncie Fire Department, said Friday he and Muncie police were continuing to investigate the blaze, and had more interviews to conduct.
The fire consumed much of the building’s roof and resulted in water damage to much of the structure.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota showed off its latest tool for screening visitors for COVID-19 at a press conference Wednesday. Meet Buffy, a 2-year-old yellow Labrador retriever from Southeastern Guide Dogs.
Laska Parrow, a trainer from Southeastern Guide Dogs, began training Buffy last July and has been at Doctors Hospital since the end of March.
According to Parrow, the guide dogs in training typically rely primarily on their vision. Buffy tended to use her nose more than her canine peers, so she was selected for a scent detection study.
Dogs in the scent training program are taught to signal when they detect changes in a person’s immune system. In training, the dogs are approximately 95% effective at detecting COVID-19 in a person.
