A final settlement has been approved between Epic Charter Schools and its state oversight agency, closing a turbulent period for Oklahoma s largest school system.
The Community Strategies Inc. Board, the school board governing Epic, agreed Wednesday night to a settlement proposed the day before by the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board. The statewide board must vote once more to finalize the agreement.
The settlement would conclude termination proceedings that threatened possible closure of Epic One-on-One, an online learning platform that makes up 60% of Epic s total student enrollment. Like all virtual charter schools in Oklahoma, Epic One-on-One is authorized to operate through the statewide board.

Epic Charter Schools and a state agency governing virtual schooling are closing in on a settlement that could end a threat to shut down an online school with more than 30,000 students.
The Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board on Tuesday approved a counter proposal to an agreement Epic drew up last week.
The counter proposal demands finances and service contracts for Epic One-on-One be completely separate from Epic Blended Charter, another school district within the Epic system.
It also asks that Epic One-on-One and Epic Blended have seven-member school boards made up of entirely different people. Both have five-member boards made up of exactly the same members. The counter proposal would require all members have clearly defined terms of service.

A member of the state agency overseeing virtual education is suing that same agency to overturn his disqualification from discussions and votes on Epic Charter Schools.
Mathew Hamrick filed a lawsuit on Tuesday against the Oklahoma Statewide Virtual Charter School Board in Oklahoma County District Court.
Hamrick, of Oklahoma City, is a member and former chairperson of the board. He is also the chief procurement officer for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
Current Chairperson Robert Franklin and members Barry Beauchamp and Brandon Tatum voted Dec. 8 to recuse Hamrick from all discussions and votes on any matter related to Epic One-on-One Charter School because of his connections with Epic co-founder David Chaney.

Tyler Polley has decided to return to UConn for a fifth year.
Polley will enter his name into the NBA Draft as he explores the “possibility of a professional offer,” but he has passed on the opportunity to transfer to another school as a graduate student.
“I want to come back because UConn basketball is my family and I wanted the chance to play ball with my family one more time,” Polley said in a statement. “I feel like we moved the program forward last year and we want to take it even further next season.”
