A former Democratic mayor of a Northern California city was charged on Tuesday with nearly a dozen felony crimes in connection to a child sex assault investigation, authorities said.
Robert Jacob, the progressive former mayor of Sebastopol in Sonoma County, was arrested Saturday on five felony and one misdemeanor sexual assault charges against a minor, the Sebastopol Police Department said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Jacob appeared in Sonoma County Superior Court, where the number of felony charges was expanded to 11, police said, citing court documents.

More charges have been filed against former Sebastopol Mayor Robert Jacob. He was arraigned on 11 felony charges in Sonoma Superior Court yesterday in connection with a child sexual assault investigation. He was arrested over the weekend and was originally booked on five felonies and one misdemeanor charge. Officials did not explain why the charges were expanded, but they said that the investigation centers on one person who came forward to police.
