OFFICIAL figures have revealed how many driving tests have been cancelled in Galashiels and Peebles due to the coronavirus pandemic. Data on the reasons behind cancellations of practical tests across the country is published by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. The latest update – put issued in March this year – shows that 128 driving tests in Galashiels were called off because of the pandemic between April and December 2020. Previous figures show that in March last year 57 were cancelled, giving a total of 185 tests not undertaken in the town because of COVID-19 since the pandemic began. The highest total to be cancelled during one month in Galashiels was in April last year, when 66 were called off. The lowest was in July (1).
THE week before the Epsom Derby and Oaks, the racing is far from out of this world. Several of the fields in the big handicaps are smaller than expected, bar the one I am really interested in: a cracking six-furlong handicap at Haydock Park (1.45) with 16 set to go to post.
The soft ground, although drying, makes this even more interesting with the likes of Bielsa (warm-up for the Wokingham), Golden Apollo, Cold Stare and TRUE MASON (nap) all particularly effective on this testing surface.
But it is the latter who is the most appealing, having plummeted in the weights in the past few months. Rated as high as 95 this time last year when he was campaigned up to seven furlongs, the bottom weight has always seemed best when locked away at the rear of the field with the hope that the front runners make it a real test at the trip.

Jockey Joe Mercer, one of the sport’s all-time greats who sadly passed away last week aged 86, will have the Group Three Coral Brigadier Gerard Stakes run in his memory. It is 30 years since Sir Michael Stoute saddled the first of his record 11 winners in the Coral Brigadier Gerard Stakes with Stagecraft and the Newmarket maestro most recently sent out the 2019 scorer Regal Reality. In the 2021 running of the 10-furlong contest, Stoute will rely on
