Op-Ed: Two peaks in San Gabriels honor racists Rename them

In 1952, Californians met atop a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains and christened it Mt. Burnham. They were posthumously honoring Frederick Russell Burnham, a Pasadena resident who had risen to fame as a soldier of fortune in southern Africa. Strangely enough, this wasn’t the only mountain in the region with an African connection. In 1931, Burnham himself had organized a state ceremony to name a summit a mile away in honor of Robert Baden-Powell, a defender of the English crown in southern Africa and founder of the modern scouting movement. These two peaks, Mts. Burnham and Baden-Powell, share more than curious allusions to distant lands and the hiking trail between them. Through their namesakes, they share a history of scouting, militarism, toxic masculinity, empire and white supremacy.

Interview: John May, secretary-general, Duke of Edinburgh s International Awards

‘The Award forces you to try stuff that you might not choose to do’ My role is to be a public face of the award internationally, helping policy-makers and business leaders to recognise the importance of the skills, behaviours, and attitudes that it develops.   The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been going for over 60 years, and we’re looking to celebrate this incredible gift next year when the Duke will be 100. He created it with John Hunt, the manager of the successful climb of Everest, and his old headmaster, back in 1956. We hope to raise funds globally to help young people who can’t easily take part, because we know it’s helped so many find their purpose, passion, and place in the world.
