Maxima at 50: The Sparkling Consort

© RVD - Erwin Olaf Today, Queen Máxima is celebrating her 50th birthday. She has been Queen Consort since April of 2013 when her husband became King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands. During her tenure as Princess of Orange and now Queen of the Netherlands, she has had access to some incredible jewels.  The Dutch Royal Family’s jewels aren’t owned by individual members for the most part but rather belong to the family foundation. Queen Juliana created the foundation so that her jewels wouldn’t be passed down to different branches of the family and possibly sold to pay inheritance taxes. (Sweden and Denmark also use the foundation model.) This is why you will often see several different family members wear pieces, unlike in Britain, where one piece largely tends to be worn by the same person for their lifetime. As such, Máxima has access to some incredible pieces of jewellery. Embed from Getty Images

Máxima at 50: reinventing the role of Queen Consort

© RVD - Martijn Beekman Queen Máxima of the Netherlands celebrates her 50th birthday today, and Royal Central is looking at her life and role. As Princess of Orange from 2002 and now Queen Consort from 2013, she has been a dedicated wife, mother, and public figure. However, she occupies a somewhat unique position in modern Dutch history. She is the first Queen Consort in more than a century and has worked to make the role her own.  From 1890 until the 2013 abdication, the Netherlands was ruled by queens. Queen Wilhemina ruled from 1890 to 1948, through both the First and Second World Wars. Queen Juliana was on the throne from 1948 to 1980, and Queen Beatrix from 1980 to 2013. Both Juliana and Beatrix abdicated in order for their heirs to inherit the throne at a younger age. King Willem-Alexander became King of the Netherlands in 2013, and he will be succeeded by the current Princess of Orange, Princess Catharina-Amalia. Embed from Getty Images

Canadian Tulip Festival kicks off as Ottawa remains under a stay-at-home order

OTTAWA The 69 th Canadian Tulip Festival is underway, and for the second straight year, the event will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 restrictions. Residents are asked to avoid seeing the tulips in-person unless they live in the area, but still, many are heading to parks to view the blooms across the capital region. The sun is shining, the weather is warm and thousands of tulips are in full bloom across Ottawa. On Friday, which marks the start of the Canadian Tulip Festival, many people took advantage of the picture-perfect day to snap a photo of the tulips at Commissioners Park, near Dow’s Lake.
