Cowley Road Hospital Christmas in Oxford 100 years ago proved to be one of the best at the city’s workhouse. That was the view of one elderly woman who spent the 1920 festive season with 60 other inmates at the Cowley Road institution. She told a reporter from our sister paper, The Oxford Times: “I’ve never known such a Christmas”, adding “Anyone who says they were not satisfied should be hung!” The reporter added that she made her comments “to the evident appreciation of everyone”. Christmas Day at the workhouse opened with carols, breakfast of tea, bread and butter and ham and bacon and a church service at 9.45am.
