State grant supports smart use of prime riverfront in Rockford

ROCKFORD A $772,000 state grant will defray some of the estimated $25 million price tag for what is expected to become downtown s first new residential building since 1975. Davenport, Iowa-based Bush Construction is working with the Rockford Public Library to develop a six-story building on property north of a new library expected to open in 2022 at 227 N. Wyman St. The project is one of 11 shovel ready projects that Gov. JB Pritzker on Thursday announced would be getting a share of $11 million in Rebuild Illinois capital funds to support economic development across the state. By giving these initiatives the upfront and transformative funding boost they need to move forward, we re spurring a chain of new public and private investments aligned with what the community wants to see, Pritzker said in a news release.  I want to zero in on that, because it s a cornerstone of this effort: we re investing in projects that fit the economic development plans for each region, ma

Browsing returns: Rockford Public Library locations to reopen to public

Browsing returns: Rockford Public Library locations to reopen to public ROCKFORD The city s libraries are ready to reopen to browsing again  another step toward a return to regular services but still quite a ways from pre-pandemic operations. Come Monday, the city s Hart, East and Montague library branches will open their doors, allowing patrons inside to browse through and select materials for checkout and to use computer stations for 45 minutes at a time. This means no congregating or classroom use, no storytimes or in-person programs. The number of people allowed inside the buildings at all times will be capped. “We are thrilled to welcome customers back to Rockford Public Library locations,” said Executive Director Lynn Stainbrook. “We are again taking careful consideration to employ protocols that enable us to offer safe, in-person library service.”

Rockford Public Library Announces Reopening Date When there isn t a whole lot going on, books will help you get through some of the more boring moments. While I don t read a ton of books, I do read a bunch of comics and graphic novels. I ve read more of those in the past year than I have in my entire life. I m sure I m not the only one who has spent a ton of time reading while stuck at home either. The Rockford Public Library has been supplying many of us from young to old an opportunity to stay sharp. Whether it be fiction or non-fiction I think we should always have a book going.

Rockford backs six-story mixed use building downtown

ROCKFORD City Council this week agreed to support what could become the first new residential development in downtown in decades with up to $4.5 million in public subsidies. Davenport, Iowa-based Bush Construction is working with the Rockford Public Library to develop the more than $22 million, six-story building on property north of a new library expected to open in 2022 at 227 N. Wyman St.  The 146,000-square-foot, mixed-use building plans call for a riverfront restaurant, retail space, underground parking and 85 apartments. Alderman Chad Tuneberg, a Republican who represents the 3rd Ward where the development would be built, said that kind of private investment in downtown is a historic milestone for an area that has long struggled to attract residents and businesses.
