Tributes paid after death of town s deputy mayor Brian Mattock

Tributes have been paid from across the council chamber to Swindon’s deputy mayor and Brian Mattock, who died at the weekend. Coun Mattock was a long-serving Conservative councillor. A former deputy leader, he had held cabinet posts and chaired committees after first working as a council officer. He was due to step up to succeed Garry Perkins as mayor in May – and was active in council and in committees until very recently despite managing a serious medical condition for some years. Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard was saddened by the news. He said: “Brian was really one of the good guys.

Plan to spend £10m on reopening Oasis Leisure Centre floated by Labour

Oasis Leisure Centre is closing..Pic - gv.Date 18/11/2020.Pic by Dave Cox. A total of £10m should be enough investment to get the Oasis centre open again, Labour group leader Jim Grant believes. Coun Grant said a combination of money borrowed by Swindon Borough Council and profits made building housing on the former Clares site nearby in North Star would be sufficient to get the leisure centre – closed since October – open and affordable for all. There has long been a plan for leaseholder Seven Capital to build housing on the cleared site – previously it was linked to the £270m snow centre scheme.

Housing development could pay for reopening of Oasis

A HOUSING development in North Star could help support the Oasis Leisure Centre s long-term future. That s according to Swindon Borough Council deputy leader Russell Holland – although such a move would be a change to previous policy, which would have seen any housing following the construction of the much-delayed snow centre. Developer Seven Capital holds the lease for the 1970s-built Oasis. It has also been given planning permission to build a £270m indoor skiing and entertainment complex across the road. As part of that deal, the company is expected to bring forward a plan for housing on derelict land nearby. But the Conservative administration’s cabinet member for the town centre, culture and heritage Dale Heenan said in December 2019 that it was a “red line in the council’s agreement with Seven Capital” that no housing would be built before the snow centre was constructed.
