Fort Bragg area Gold Star Youth honor memory of parents with run

One father spent half his life in the Army. Another loved marathons, and another loved fishing and hunting.   Each were soldiers and parents, and 13 of their children will honor their memory with a Memorial Day 5K run Monday in Fayetteville.  Since April 10, the children have spent their Saturdays training with soldiers who have served as their mentors.  They’ve met at Clark Park in Fayetteville   playing games and sharing what’s on their minds, gathering in a circle to proclaim who they are running in memory of, and being encouraged to run.   The national organization was founded by Lisa Hallett after her husband, Capt. John Hallett,30, was killed when returning from a mission in Afghanistan in August 2009.

Astrophysics grad reflects on his mentors

Delondrae Carter graduated this May with a degree in astrophysics from ASU’s School of Earth and Space Exploration.  His interest in the universe began in fourth grade when he worked on a project demonstrating the vast scale of the solar system. From there, he was inspired to learn as much as he could about astronomy and astrophysics.  “That first project helped me discover that the world was a much bigger place than I initially thought,” Carter said.  Carter chose ASU for his undergraduate studies and was awarded a New American University Scholarship President’s Award. That was soon followed by an Interdisciplinary Enrichment Fellowship and a Goldwater Scholarship, which is one of the most prestigious awards for STEM majors.
