10 Gatton Academy Seniors Recognized as Candidates for 2021 U S Presidential Scholars Program

Elise Swift-Taylor Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021 Thirteen Gatton Academy seniors learned recently they are candidates for the 2021 United States Presidential Scholars Program. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize and honor some of the nation s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The 2021 candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholar from The Gatton Academy are: Sachi Barnaby (Bowling Green High School), daughter of Jerry and Masako Barnaby, from Bowling Green. Samuel Chang (Bowling Green High School), son of Yining Chen and Nianchu Chang, from Bowling Green. Andrew R. Davison (Rowan County Senior High School), son of Rebecca and Scott Davison, Morehead.

The findings, reported online today in Nature, could lead to ways to manipulate this process to improve the immune system s ability to combat viral infections, such as those fueling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists have long known that cells use a process called autophagy to rid themselves of unwanted material.
