Swindon wins £430k government cash to make streets safer

Where £20m funding will be spent in Swindon town centre facelift

Of £20m granted to Swindon Borough Council for seven regeneration projects for the town centre, the largest amount – £6m – will be spent on enabling the Kimmerfields development. The work on the site – which will have a new headquarters tower for finance company Zurich – is the most expensive of all the schemes put forward by the council and its Towns Fund Board, a report reveals. The cheapest is the plan to create a new marketplace in the town centre – although that still needs to have a site identified. The Kimmerfields plan will also need £10.5m of the council’s own money to be brought to completion – the report says the project will create 100,000 sq ft of office space, 250 flats and will include a new access off Corporation Street and will see public areas revamped and made into green space.

Have your say on future of GWR Park in council survey

A Bank Holiday Monday at GWR Park, Swindon THE future of one of the most popular and historically important parks in Swindon is up for discussion. People are being asked how they want to use GWR Park in Faringdon Road and how it should be developed and preserved in an online survey launched by Swindon Borough Council. One of the closest green spaces to the town centre, the park was bought by Great Western Railway as a cricket pitch for its workers and is the oldest public park in Swindon. Cabinet member for regeneration of culture, heritage and leisure Dale Heenan said: The GWR Park on Faringdon Road has played an active role in the town centre s social and leisure life for over 170 years.
