The Boston Globe’s columnist, Jeff Jacoby, is an excellent writer but generally much too conservative for me.
On Valentine’s Day, he published a heartwarming article about our 19th president , Rutherford Hayes. I like to think that as a student of American history, I know enough about the past to inform my current analyses of the events and ideas that shape our todays. But …. Jacoby really got me thinking.
The basic decency and quiet courage of President Hayes in his stands on human rights included abolition as his guiding principle but he also advocated for women and other then-minorities. Interestingly, he was the first one to promote the appearance of women before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Guest Commentary I have been very impressed with the Democratic House impeachment managers thus far in the proceedings against Donald Trump. Of course, I am an easy mark when it comes to that! That said, the most impressive part of their case is how Trump promoted, supported, funded, and incited anarchy and the attack on the Capitol, thus putting members of Congress, and especially Vice President Mike Pence and Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at risk of their lives. I think the most telling narrative is the absolute dereliction of responsibility by Trump as commander-in-chief to activate the National Guard, which were, in fact, specifically told by the “acting” secretary of defense to not get involved at all. Only after numerous calls from Pence and others to the Defense Department was any action taken to activate the National Guard unit, almost four hours after the rioting had begun and none of those calls were made to Trump by anyone but directly to the Defense Department because
