On Tuesday, county leaders approved more than $3 million for broadband expansion in their most rural communities.
In Roanoke County, it’s the tale of the broadband have’s and has not’s. Catawba Supervisor Martha Hooker said they’re now able to close that gap.
“It’s just a very rural area that needs this infrastructure in place to do things that many of us just take for granted,” Hooker said.
A new government website and interactive map launched Tuesday for citizens to monitor progress on a variety of broadband expansion projects dotting Roanoke County.
âWhat I like about this is it shows weâre not just concentrating in one area,â said County Administrator Dan OâDonnell. âWeâre focusing around the county.â
After a final vote Tuesday to approve a $3 million project with Cox Communications that will expand internet access to more than 300 unserved homes in the Windsor Hills, Cave Spring and Catawba districts, Roanoke County has amassed close to $4 million in private, local, state and federal funds for rural broadband in one yearâs time, with $500,000 of that taxpayer-backed, OâDonnell said.
