Multi-million pound tugboat named after Portland Port boss Rupert Best

PORTLAND Port s operations and services have been boosted with the introduction of a new multi-million pound tugboat - which has been officially named in honour of a former director who died earlier this year. Portland Port director and decorated Royal Navy commander Rupert Best, who retired from duty in the early 1990s, was instrumental in persuading Langham Industries to buy the port from the MOD in 1996, and worked tirelessly to grow the operation. Mr Best died aged 76 in February, and his friend and Portland Port chief executive, Bill Reeves, said the new tug will be named in memory of the late former military commander.

Picture: Portland Port Police A NEW police constable for Portland Port Police was sworn in at Weymouth Magistrates Court this week. Jason Barnes attended the court, along with Portland Port Police Sergeant, Chris Grant, to be attested to the office of Constable on Thursday, March 4. Police Sergeant, Chris Grant, said in court it was a monumental day for PC Barnes and an amazing achievement for his career. PC Barnes read out a declaration before it was signed by himself and the two sitting magistrates in the court. Chair of Magistrates, Mike Davies, told PC Barnes: It is a superb code to live by and if you do all the things you swore, that would be a wonderful thing.
