Two Louisville Police Officers Connected To Breonna Taylor Shooting Have Been Fired

Emergency medical technician Breonna Taylor, 26, was shot and killed by police in her home in March. Her name has become a rallying cry in protests against police brutality and social injustice. A pair of Louisville police officers involved in the raid on Breonna Taylor s apartment last year were formally terminated from the force, effective immediately. The officers, Detective Joshua Jaynes, who secured the warrant for the raid, and Detective Myles Cosgrove, who federal investigators said fired the fatal round during the botched narcotics search of Taylor s home on March 13, have 10 days to appeal the police department s decision. Both officers have been on paid leave in the months since the shooting and in late December received notification from interim police chief Yvette Gentry that the Louisville Metro Police Department intended to sever their employment.

Taylor was killed in her apartment by officers serving a search warrant as part of a drug investigation into her ex-boyfriend. They did not find any drugs or evidence of criminal activity in her apartment. The officers used a battering ram to break down her door at around 1 a.m. on March 13. Taylor s boyfriend,  Kenneth Walker, fired one shot as the officers breached the apartment, thinking they were intruders. One of the officers was struck in the thigh, and they returned fire. Taylor was shot six times and died in the hallway.

Two More Officers Involved In Deadly Breonna Taylor Raid Fired

Credit LMPD Detectives Myles Cosgrove and Joshua Jaynes with the Louisville Metro Police Department have been officials fired for their roles the night 26-year old Breonna Taylor was shot and killed by police who burst into her apartment with a no-knock warrant on March 13th. The FBI determined that the bullet that fatally wounded Taylor was fired by Cosgrove. He was terminated for violating procedures for use of force and for having his body camera turned off during the raid. Jaynes was fired for being in violation of department policy and for giving “untruthful” information to obtain the warrant. LMPD Detective Brett Hankison, who was also at the scene that night was let go in June for going against protocol firing “blindly” into Taylor’s and a neighboring apartment.

Mayor Greg Fischer announced Wednesday that former Atlanta police chief Erika Shields will lead the Louisville agency, making her the first woman to do so on a permanent basis. When tragedy happened in her city, she put her city before herself [by] stepping down so she would not be a distraction as her community worked to heal, said Mayor Fischer.
