Rockford beef: Historically high prices hit area butcher shops

ROCKFORD Just in time for grilling season, beef prices are skyrocketing. Brace yourself to pay a bit more than you’re accustomed to if you plan to pick up a couple of filet mignons this weekend.  “It’s been retailing between that $25 and $30 range per pound and that’s trimmed,” said Dan Baker, co-owner of Pinnon’s Foods, 2324 N. Court St. “You could have gotten it in that upper teens to lower 20s range a month or so ago. So, it’s up quite a bit.” The price of an 8-ounce filet at Pinnon s Foods has risen $2 in the past week to $13.98, Baker said. Other local butcher shops are experiencing similar increases.
