Canadian speed team decimated by early-season injuries
Alexander out for the season; Seger eyes World Championship comeback

Within a short window of time, a few minutes, the Canadian team took a couple of Mike Tyson-like uppercuts with injuries to two of its top speed racers in the season-opening downhill race in Val d’Isere, France, last week.
Brodie Seger, 24, an emerging leader on the young Canuck team caught an edge seconds from the finish line, narrowly missing the right-side finish post as he spiraled rapidly into the finish area, injuring his shoulder.
The North Vancouver skier, who had the fourth-fastest time on the last training run in Val d’Isere, considers himself lucky to have “threaded the needle” missing the finish post.

Like almost every athlete, Sam Morse’s competitive world came to a halt last March when the coronavirus pandemic shut down all sports, including the World Cup ski circuit in Europe.
Morse, who grew up in Carrabassett Valley about seven minutes from the main entrance to Sugarloaf, is one of the rising downhill skiers on the U.S. Alpine team. With everything on hold, Morse came home to Maine. And that time home with his parents, Earle and Pam Morse, helped Morse hit the refresh button.

Arthur Bauchet and Jeroen Kampschreur made more memories at the Swiss ski resort where they each got their first World Cup victories as they dazzled with another golden flourish following four days of Europa Cup races.
St. Moritz, Switzerland hosted the third stage of the 2020-21 Europa Cup from 16 to 19 December. Two giant slalom and two slalom races were held as part of the event.
France’s Arthur Bauchet swept gold in the men’s standing class in what was his first major race of the season. There was a different runner up in each of the four races - Austria’s Nico Pajantschitsch and Thomas Grochar, Russia’s Aleksei Bugaev and fellow Frenchman Jordan Broisin all finished within 10 seconds of last season’s overall Crystal Globe winner.
