Jesus Andres Gonzalez was sentenced in Yuma County Superior Court nearly a year after being found guilty of the murder of a 20-year-old Leondre Richards. Prosecutors say the fatal shooting occurred while Gonzalez and four other people committed three home invasions looking for drugs and money. The Yuma Sun reported that at the conclusion of a five-week trial that ended in March 2020, Gonzalez also was convicted of three counts of burglary, six counts of aggravated assault and one count of kidnapping.

Mark Finchem Upping the stakes in what has become a political feud over the 2020 election, Rep. Mark Finchem (R-Oro Valley) is suing a Democratic lawmaker charging she smeared his name. The lawsuit filed in Yuma County Superior Court says that the Rep. Charlene Fernandez (D-Yuma) knew or should have known that there was no evidence linking either Finchem or now former Rep. Anthony Kern (R-Glendale) to the Jan. 6 riot and breach of the U.S. Capitol. Yet Fernandez, along with other Democratic lawmakers, sent a letter to the FBI and the Department of Justice asking that they investigate the pair who were in Washington for the event.

Both politicians have denied any wrongdoing. Fernandez, who lives in Yuma, and the rest of the state House and Senate Democratic caucuses signed the letter and sent it Feb. 12 to FBI Director Christopher Wray and acting Attorney General Jeffrey A.
