Wes Smitherman stifled the slightest of laughs before answering a question about his older sisterâs basketball days at Jonesville High.
He hadnât thought about them in a while. His last remaining sibling, Joan Elizabeth Smitherman Dawson, died last week. So a smile, however short-lived, was a welcome diversion.
Dawson â Jo to her friends and heartbroken former colleagues at The Sentinel and the Winston-Salem Journal â had been a heck of a player.
âShe was really fast. Competitive, too. She made the All-Northwest team back in the day, which was a really big achievement,â Smitherman said. âBut that was back when they thought girls were too âfragileâ to play full court so they never crossed mid-court.â

MACOMB – Benjamin (Ben) La Prad, the son of Tammy and Jim La Prad, has been named the MidAmerica National Bank Senior of the Month for March 2021.
Ben is a Four Sport Varsity Athlete which includes Cross Country, Soccer, Track & Field, and Swimming. He also participates in Spanish Club, Band, Choir (Secretary), Macomb Youth Leadership Organization (MYLO), and National Honor Society.
He has earned honors throughout his high school years, including West Central All Conference Academic Athlete, High Honor Roll, Track & Field State Qualifier and placed 7th in Cross Country Sectionals.

Should we seek divine forgiveness for our shortcomings? Some are of the view that perceived divine forgiveness helps us in distress, depression and other related issues, thus contributing to our well-being. The feeling of being forgiven by Almighty can be healing. Academic researchers should explore divine forgiveness more.
Self-forgiveness is another subject and can be uncomfortable for many. Forgive yourself and move forward it will help restore your freedom, we are told.
It is often emphasized: Repentance helps when seeking forgiveness. In the end, forgiveness should lead to love.
