Eugene police said there is no evidence of a rumored kidnapping Sunday afternoon near the University of Oregon campus.
Early Sunday afternoon, posts on social media alleging that a kidnapping took place in a parking lot of a Nova Urgent Care at 599 East 13th Ave. circulated and 911 began receiving calls referring to the post, the Eugene Police Department said.
A caller reported to police they heard a woman screaming in a vehicle and a man approached and made a shushing gesture.
Officers responded and did not locate either person.
Police said in a news release Monday that security footage provided by the Nova Urgent Care showed a man on foot flagging down a vehicle as it arrived driving east on East 13th Avenue.
Only one person was found in the vehicle midday Monday, Eugene Police Department spokesperson Melinda McLaughlin said.
On Tuesday, McLaughlin added that the death does not appear suspicious, and elaborated Wednesday that the case is being investigated as a probable suicide.
On Monday, the medical examiner was called, retained jurisdiction and will carry out a death investigation, McLaughlin said.
As of Wednesday, there had not yet been an autopsy.
