What we ve been playing

Somewhat shamefully, I dismissed Immortals Fenyx Rising almost immediately when I played it back at launch, wholly unimpressed by its drab, uninspiring opening location - a brown, war-blasted sweep of destitution that, it turns out, massively undersells the rest of the game. On a whim though, I picked it up again over the weekend, finally managing to force myself through its miserable starter island into the game proper - a glorious undulation of verdant hills, preposterously stacked precipices, and endless distractions - and I m having a genuine blast. Sure, its shameless pilfering from Breath of the Wild inevitably leads to unfavourable comparisons, but there s a lot of fun to be had just ambling your way through its irreverent stew of Greek mythology and Ubisoft excess. The map is the biggest letdown, a disorientating (if undoubtedly beautiful) mish-mash of contrivances that s just too stacked and busy to elicit any real sense of place. Unlike that

Returnal review - magnificent and monstrous

Returnal review Availability: Out April 30th on PS5 The history is going to be important here, if we re going to pull all of this apart. Returnal is the latest from Housemarque, the Finnish team behind masterly arcade-style shoot-em-ups like Resogun, twin-stick shooters like Dead Nation and Alienation, and the superlative Nex Machina. It s their first triple-A one though, and with big budget comes big scope. Returnal s is vast - it wants to be everything. It s a roguelite, insofar as death returns you to the start and the dungeonlike world procedurally changes with each run through it. But it s also a metroidvania, handing out new abilities after boss kills which open up new paths. And it s a third-person shooter, obviously. But also a bullet-hell arcade game. And a first-person narrative horror. And a soulslike. It picks from Ridley Scott, Eugene Jarvis, Hidetaka Miyazaki, H.R. Giger. From Metroid, P.T., Control. From Defender and Vanquish. Pick your poison - Returnal stocks eve

Returnal shows that Sony can still be weird and daring

Next machina. Updated on 22 April 2021 There s been understandable concern recently about Sony s reported obsession with blockbusters that are too big to fail - the God of Wars, the Horizon: Zero Dawns and the god-forbid-it s-real The Last of Us remake - so it s quite remarkable how Returnal has arrived within mere weeks of the story like some kind of rebuttal. This is one of the most daring, dazzling and straight-up different big ticket games to come from Sony since Death Stranding. Is it any good? After half a dozen hours scrambling through a game dense with systems and mystery it s hard to say. Is it interesting? Abso-fucking-lutely.
