Readers respond to the shadow defence secretary’s announcement that his party’s commitment to Trident is ‘non-negotiable’
You report (Labour to state ‘non-negotiable’ support for UK’s nuclear weapons, 25 February) that the shadow defence secretary, John Healey, says his party’s commitment to nuclear weapons is “non-negotiable”, seemingly taking a harder line even than successive Conservative governments, which have at least supported talks on multilateral nuclear disarmament.
The new Labour leadership in its rhetoric seems more frightened of being accused at home of being weak on defence than a nuclear attack by a foreign power. For years, Whitehall analysts have considered a pandemic more likely than any real threat of a nuclear attack. Yet for years, ministers and opposition frontbenchers ignored the former while exaggerating the latter. Trade union leaders, meanwhile, back a new Trident missile program
The highly radioactive nuclear waste being stored at Millstone Power Station in Waterford, as well as the nuclear material left behind in Haddam after the Connecticut Yankee plant was dismantled, isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Maybe never. And that’s not acceptable.
The lack of concern about the nuclear waste storage problem was one of my takeaways from the editorial board’s meeting last week with leaders from Millstone-owner Dominion Energy, held virtually of course.

To the Editor:
My goodness, Mark Trafton must have really had a burr under his saddle. His 1/22/21 letter, “Writer wrong on C-10, Seabrook nuclear power plant,” used over 1000 words to rebut my less than 500 word 1/8/21 letter.
Wow!
Let me respond by saying he misinterpreted what I said about C-10 being a bunch of zealots. Of course, “presently” C-10 is a genteel, altruistic group of people whose “stated” concern is the health and welfare of mankind. He didn’t mention that their “ulterior” motive is to shut down Seabrook Station by any non-violent means available, regardless of its aptness.
