Methuselah fined $1,000; owner/councilor Cohen to contest

PITTSFIELD — Methuselah Bar and Lounge has been fined $1,000 by the city for allegedly running afoul of two coronavirus safety standards, while the owner continues to protest that she is being targeted and said she will challenge the determination. The city fined City Council member Yuki Cohen for not wearing a mask at Methuselah and “for customers sitting at the bar area without proper distancing,” said Mayor Linda Tyer. Cohen said she had closed her establishment to the public at the time, after 9 p.m. Dec. 11, and she was having a drink with her colleague and friend, likening the situation to being at her private residence.

Methuselah to face hearing over COVID-19 cases; owner Yuki Cohen says hospitality sector hangs by fragile thread

PITTSFIELD — Representatives from Methuselah Bar and Lounge, owned by At-Large City Councilor Yuki Cohen, will be asked to appear at a “show cause” hearing before the Licensing Board next month, the board’s chairman said Friday. The hearing follows a referral from the City Council, which, this week, asked the Licensing Board to look into a “written warning” about allegedly unheeded coronavirus safety standards that the city issued Methuselah in August. Andy Cambi, a senior sanitarian in the Health Department, told the council that a photo emerged showing someone sitting “facing the bar” at the establishment without food or tableware in front of them, in what he said was a violation of the state’s coronavirus regulations at the time. Cohen denied any violations, saying the patrons were sitting at a high-top table, not the bar, and that their food had not arrived yet.
