Korea s Baeksang Awards Topped by Lee Joon-ik and Yoo Jae-suk

Feelgood movie “Samjin Company English Class” was named as the top movie at South Korea’s annual Baeksang Arts Awards, which were held behind closed doors for the second year running, due to COVID-19 restrictions. JTBC’s “Beyond Evil” was named as the top TV drama.
The grand prizes went to Lee Joon-ik for his unconventional story telling in movie “The Book of Fish,” and to variety performer Yoo Jae-suk in the TV section. The show was broadcast live by JTBC in Korea and streamed internationally on TikTok.

“Beyond Evil” (aka “Monster”) won best drama while “Samjin Company English Class” was chosen best film at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards held on May 13 to honor outstanding works in TV, film and theater.
Popular host and entertainer Yoo Jae-suk and film director Lee Joon-hik, who helmed “The Book of Fish,” won the daesang, or grand prizes, for TV and film, respectively.

The Baeksang Arts Awards is known as the Oscars of South Korea and has been recognizing stellar achievements in the Korean entertainment industry since 1965. Before the winners are selected every second quarter of the year, the nominees and nominated works are shown to a diverse set of critics. On the other hand, the TikTok Popularity award is given to the artist who garnered the highest number of votes on the said platform.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the period film Book of Fish and comedian Yoo Jae-suk were the big winners at this year s Baeksang Arts Awards.
At the ceremony that took place on Thursday evening at KINTEX exhibition hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Lee became a three-time grand prize winner after taking home the same award in 2006 for King and the Clown and in 2016 for The Throne and Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the historical drama “Book of Fish” and comedian Yoo Jae-suk have won the grand prize in the film and TV categories, respectively, at this year’s Baeksang Arts Awards.
Lee, known as a master of period films in South Korea for his previous hits like “King and the Clown” (2005) and “The Throne” (2015), took the top prize for films at the prestigious entertainment awards show held at KINTEX exhibition hall on Thursday in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul.
The latest black-and-white historical biopic “Book of Fish” features the story of Yak-jeon, an elite bureaucrat in the 1392-1910 Joseon Dynasty who wants to write a piscine encyclopedia while in exile on a remote island with the help of young fisherman Chang-dae.
