Cuomo administration worried data on nursing home deaths was going to be used against us, aide said
Updated on: February 12, 2021 / 7:01 PM / CBS/AP Cuomo accused of nursing home death toll cover-up
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo s top aide told Democratic lawmakers that his administration took months to release data on the coronavirus death toll among nursing home residents because officials froze over worries the information was going to be used against us. The information came to the Associated Press from a Democratic lawmaker who attended the Wednesday meeting and a partial transcript released by the governor s office.
Republicans who call the comment an admission of a cover-up are now calling for resignations of both Cuomo and the aide, secretary to the governor Melissa DeRosa, while progressive Democrats are blasting the administration over what they say is a lack of transparency.

His physicians say he’s at greater risk of getting seriously ill and dying from COVID-19 because of his medical conditions.
His mother, Sophy Chaffee, told Healthline: “What’s disturbing is that I and other parents are vaccinated as caregivers. But our kids, who are at greater risk, are now at the back of the line. A friend’s son said something like, ‘It’s like you matter and we don’t.’”

Admitting underserved communities in the New York were under-represented in initial stages of testing for the virus, Cuomo vowed not to make the same mistake again.
“They were left behind during COVID, highest infection rate, lowest testing rate,” he said. “Black communities, Latino communities, poor communities. Left to the markets forces, you will see, once again, Black, Latino and poor communities left behind.”
Cuomo said he is developing a task force to penetrate areas largely left to their own devices to handle the virus the first time around. He hopes for it to become a model to the country for equitable outreach for the vaccine.
