LETTER | Last Saturday, April 24, Asean leaders met in Jakarta to discuss the Myanmar crisis, including the junta’s crackdown on civilians since the Feb 1 coup.
Asean and Senior Gen Min Aung Hlaing (
arriving for the Jakarta meet above, left) reached a “five-point consensus”, which Myanmar’s pro-democracy activists criticised sharply for its failure to address the human rights violations and post-coup violence.
As violence continues in the Southeast Asian country, Asean must now produce a road map that can ensure the return of stability while all parties seek larger and long-term solutions.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 1 (Bernama): Myanmar’s military junta must give a clear timeframe as when it will hand over power back to the civilian government, Prof Dr Aruna Gobinath, former lecturer at National Defence University Malaysia said.
She said setting a timeframe is crucial as this would allow the reconciliatory process which Asean is pushing for, to take place more constructively. A timeframe need to be in place. Asean should take a stand, how many years from now? They (the junta) said election (to) take place end of this year. Is it going to be end of this year with the Covid-19 now becoming worse?
Asean s suggestions to be considered when country is stable
According to
Nikkei Asia, military-owned Myawaddy TV reported him saying at a State Administration Council meeting that the regime is currently prioritising the stability of the country.
He reportedly said: The visit of the delegation team proposed by the Asean leaders will be considered to be allowed, depending on the stability of the country.
In a press release read out during the programme, the military said they have informed Asean that they will give careful consideration to the constructive suggestions made by the Asean leaders when stability returns to the country.
Long way forward in carrying out the plan
Speaking to reporters after the first in-person meeting with other Asean leaders since the coup took place on Feb. 1, PM Lee added that Myanmar s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing was not against engaging Asean in a constructive way ,
Saying that he presumes Asean would now work to put together a delegation, and flesh out the details of the humanitarian assistance, PM Lee added that there is a long way forward in implementing the plan.
This is because it s one thing to say you ll cease violence and release political prisoners; it s another thing to get it done ,
