BARPETA: Barpeta district administration has started preparation for the Assembly election. In a press meet on Saturday at the Deputy Commissioner s conference hall, the Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, Munindra Sarma stated that preparation had started for the election in six constituencies of the entire district. In the six constituencies of Barpeta, Sarbhog, Jania, Baghbar, Sarukshetry and Chenga there are all total 11,41,384 voters. Among them, 5,87,680 are male and 5,53,678 are female voters. There are 16,762 D-voters and 1,596 polling stations in the entire district. Total 10 are women polling stations,12 model polling stations, 124 are char area polling stations and 61 polling stations are for web casting.

Students of various colleges in Sylhet today staged demonstrations in the city for around an hour demanding reopening of educational institutions.
Students from MC College, Sylhet Govt College, Madan Mohon College Sylhet and several other colleges under National University, demonstrated in the city under the banner of General Students, Sylhet.
Several hundred of them gathered in front of Sylhet Central Shaheed Minar at Chowhatta point and formed a human chain in the morning to press home their demand.
After the human chain and a procession, they blocked the road, causing severe traffic congestion in the city around noon, our local correspondent reports.

MC College Gang Rape: Husband held overnight for testifying at court

The husband of the woman gang-raped at a college in Sylhet last year was arrested on Saturday just so that he testified in the court the next day.
Lawyers raised eyebrows, saying that such a strong action is only taken when a witness ignores a general warrant issued by a court.
They added that the night spent in police custody must have been traumatising for the man whose wife was gang-raped at MC College on September 25, 2020. According to the law, when a witness ignores a summon the court can issue a general warrant. If the general warrant is ignored, the court may then issue a non-bailable warrant, which happened in this particular instance. But the judge skipped the second step, said Shahiduzzaman Chowdhury, the lawyer of the man who is also the plaintiff of the case.
