Angler dies after being struck in shanty by snowmobile during a Michigan ice fishing festival

Devils Lake - Google Satellite Image MANITOU BEACH, MI (WKZO AM/FM) A snowmobile crash at an ice fishing festival in Southeast Michigan left one man dead Saturday night. It happened on a lake in Lenawee County during the annual Tip-Up Festival at around 7:30 p.m. when a man on a snowmobile crashed into a shanty on the ice at Devils Lake. Michigan State Police investigators say the man inside the shanty suffered critical injuries and did not survive. A passenger on the snowmobile driver had minor injuries. Police Troopers said the crash was not related to the ice as it was thick enough for both activities. Investigations continue and there was no word on what exactly caused the crash or if any potential charges are coming.

OBITUARY: James William LaFerney

James William LaFerney James William LaFerney, Jr., 64, of Coldwater Michigan, lost his lifelong struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and his battle against cancer December 10, 2020. He died in his home surrounded by his loving family. James was born on October 13, 1956 in Ypsilanti, Michigan to James and Yvonne (Perry) LaFerney. He grew up in Michigan and graduated from Belleville High School in 1975. He lived most of his adult life in New Madrid Missouri where he had many friends and family. He returned to Michigan in 2013 where he met the love of his life Janice Baughey. James had a hilarious sense of humor and was quite a jokester, but was best known for his infectious laugh. He enjoyed music and hunting, especially deer camp with the guys, and spending time at the family’s lake house.
