The shoes worn by NBA champion Michael Jordan during his rookie season in 1984-85 at the Chicago Bulls sold at auction for $152,500.
A pair of basketball legend Michael Jordan’s famous Air Jordans from his rookie season sold at auction for $152,500 on Wednesday, the star item in Sotheby’s first international dedicated sneaker sale.
Seen as a niche interest 10 years ago, sneakers are now one of the fastest-growing markets at auctions, attracting attention from the general public as well as leading collectors.
The “Gamers Only” auction, conducted entirely online, featured 13 pairs of match-worn basketball shoes from some of the NBA’s greatest athletes, including Scottie Pippen and Shaquille O’Neal.

The NBA’s new “play-in” tournament is likely here to stay, and with it comes a tectonic shift in the league’s class structure. Where there once was 16 postseason spots guaranteed to teams that win a certain amount during the regular season, there are now 12. Where there once was 14 teams with no kind of taste of the playoffs, there will now be just 10. Where there once was… nothing… there will now be eight teams pitted against each other in single-elimination chaos, likely for the privilege of being first-round cannon fodder. All in all, it’s an expansion of the middle class paired with a contraction of the upper class.

When Rajon Rondo joined the Clippers, it was a chance for him to reunite with the so-called “Rondo whisperer” in Ty Lue, a nickname that had been bestowed upon Lue by Doc Rivers when the three were all with the Celtics.
And when DeMarcus Cousins followed suit less than two weeks later, it was an opportunity for the big man to reunite with his favorite point guard Rondo, who many consider to be the Cousins whisperer himself. The two former Kentucky Wildcats have a deep bond that extends off the basketball court, as Rondo was a groomsman in Cousins’ wedding in 2019.

CLEVELAND Damian Lillard had 32 points and nine assists and Enes Kanter had 18 points and 13 rebounds, leading the Portland Trail Blazers to their highest point total of the season and a 141-105 rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
Lillard scored 16 points in the first quarter and 14 points in the third as Portland moved within one-half game of the Mavericks and Lakers for fifth place in the West. The Trail Blazers are seventh and would be the top seed in the play-in tournament.

Carmelo Anthony might be one of the most polarizing superstars in NBA history, but there is no doubt that he’s one of the top offensive players the league has ever seen. The veteran reached 10th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list Monday, surpassing Elvin Hayes with 27,318 career points.
Anthony solidified his spot as a top-10 scorer with 14 points in the Portland Trail Blazers’ loss against the Atlanta Hawks. The 36-year-old has seven more games this season to catch Moses Malone, who is just 91 points away in ninth place.
