This week’s parshah opens with the laws applying to the Kohanim, the religious, ritual leaders of Israel. The reading provides their quintessential leadership role: to direct the Jewish people in areas of the sacred and mundane, the ritually pure and impure, the teachings and the statutes, the details of the festivals and the prohibitions of the Sabbath.

Now this week we are “sandwiched” between Memorial Day ceremonies remembering the tragedy of our lost loved ones and the over 24,000 soldiers after 73 years of war, and the Independence Day celebrations of returning home after 2,000 years of exile. And now we hear that we should expect another attack from Iran. It’s a lot to digest.

It gives me no pleasure to report that Passover food gave my dog diarrhea.
And I’m not talking about food like borscht or candied fruit or, God forbid, coconut macaroons. Even humans can’t tolerate those confections. What got Tivo’s stomach all in knots was the kosher-for-Passover dog food we were feeding him.
The truth is, observant Jews don’t normally feed their dogs kosher kibble. On all other nights, Purina is just fine. But on this night, well, on this night, we need to steer clear of a few restrictions. Allow me to explain.

The conundrum is well-known. We are not permitted to eat chametz on Erev Pesach after the fourth halachic hour of the day (please visit myzmanim.com for specific times in your area), and we are not permitted to eat matzah on Erev Pesach. On a day when we have restrictions regarding eating both chametz and matzah, how are we supposed to fulfill our obligation to eat three meals on Shabbat?!
Background Information
The Mishna (Pesachim 3:6) presents a debate between Rabi Meir and the chachamim whether chametz must be eliminated before Erev Pesach that falls on Shabbat. The halacha (Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 444:1) follows the chachamim that one may eat chametz on Erev Pesach that falls on Shabbat through the fourth halachic hour of the day.
