Firefighters battling major gorse fire in the Mourne Mountains A large gorse fire in the Mourne Mountains MORE than 50 firefighters battled a gorse fire in the Mourne Mountains yesterday. Firefighters worked to put out the fire in the Bloody Bridge area of Newcastle from the early hours. A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service said 12 fire appliances were helping to fight the blaze. The wind later pushed the fire down the eastern slope of Leganabruchan and into Donard Forest in Newcastle. Mourne Heritage Trust and Sky Watch, a charity which uses drones to capture footage of the spread of wildfires, were helping fire fighters.
