Another week of National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action meant another week of hard fought games, league drama and new signings as teams continue to battle in the month-long, pre-season Challenge Cup.
To start off the week, the Orlando Pride faced Gotham FC on Wednesday, April 14. The highly anticipated match ended in a 0-1 victory for Gotham, even after an incredible penalty kick save by Orlando keeper Ashlyn Harris.
Surprisingly to most fans, the majority of the first 60 minutes was a back and forth battle as players such as Sydney Leroux and Courtney Peterson of the Orlando Pride got good looks early on. Despite their dominance in creating chances, Orlando was unable to finish any of their opportunities, leaving the match scoreless late into the final 30 minutes.

Morgan Weaver almost didn’t even play in Thursday’s Challenge Cup match after a controversial red card last week. But after the NWSL overturned her suspension, she became the game-winner for the Portland Thorns in a 1-0 road win over the Chicago Red Stars.
After 66 minutes of tense deadlock in Chicago, Weaver was launched upfield from a long, direct Celeste Boureille ball. Weaver collected it and cut inside to get past defender Casey Krueger before slipping a shot inside the far post.

The 2021 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Challenge Cup began this past weekend with four games, chaos and a lot of red cards. Fans on Twitter have already re-named the tournament the Chaos Cup.
Beginning with the first fixture of the weekend, the Houston Dash took on the Chicago Red Stars. Although the matchup would typically feature two former Cardinal, Jane Campbell ’17 from the Dash and Tierna Davidson ’20 from the Red Stars, were both called up for international duty.
The match was played mostly in the middle third and quickly became a battle of the midfielders. As a re-match of the 2020 Challenge Cup, it was relatively uneventful. The Dash took only three shots to the Red Stars’ 11. None of the shots from the Dash were on target, an issue that has been credited to the absence of their main front line, all of whom were called up to their respective international teams for the FIFA window.
