Asbury Park to hold special election on rent control today

If approved, the rent control ordinance suggested by the housing coalition will go into effect immediately.  But Asbury Park will still get rent control even if voters reject the ballot initiative. The city approved its own rent control ordinance in March, which will go into effect on June 1 if the ballot initiative fails. It would offer fewer restrictions to landlords than the one the housing coalition is campaigning for citizens vote for today. Voters who opted for mail-in ballots must return them to the Monmouth County Board of Elections in Freehold by 8 p.m. if delivering them in person. If mailing ballots back, it must be postmarked no later than April 20 and received by the board of elections within 48 hours of the poll closing.
