Tsunami of economic effects to hit Morgantown economy after ex-Mylan plant closure, new study finds | Putnam News

CHARLESTON — It could be a decade before the local economy recovers from the closure of the former Mylan Pharmaceuticals plant in Morgantown, with effects being felt almost immediately, according to an economic impact study released last week. The layoff of 1,431 workers will result in the loss of 4,642 jobs in Monongalia County, West Virginia, over the course of the coming year, economist Michael Shuman found in his economic analysis of the July 31 closure. This represents nearly 6% of the county’s existing jobs. Shuman holds a law degree and two undergraduate degrees from Stanford University, and has studied community economics and the lasting effects of dozens of large plant closures for more than three decades. The study was commissioned by Democracy Collaborative, a national progressive research and community economic development lab.
