How to Diversify Trump County - American Renaissance

How to Diversify Trump County Brentin Mock, Bloomberg, December 11, 2020 When driving from Pittsburgh to its deep eastern suburbs, you know you’ve arrived in Westmoreland County when you see the farms with the massive Trump campaign displays, some as elaborate as Christmas Nativity yard scenes. Indeed, there is an entire Trump House. The county is reliably Republican and overwhelmingly white  roughly 95% white compared to 2.4% Black and 2.8% “Other.” When Trump alarmed voters that Democrats and socialists were coming to doom the suburbs, this county was the kind of place he envisioned saving. He won it in November with 63.46% of the vote, which was 2 percentage points less than he won it with in 2016.

A Very Short History of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Quarterly

A Very Short History of Pittsburgh For Pittsburgh, geography and geology have been destiny. August 25, 2008 Geography comes first. Close upon the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, one gets a sense of westward flowing waters, but a map of Western Pennsylvania shows the Allegheny flowing south and the Monongahela north, almost at right angles to the Ohio. A fourth river, the Potomac, comes into play by bringing the coast of Virginia close to the Monongahela and allowing for some tough navigation to connect Pittsburgh with the Atlantic Ocean. Lastly the mountains. The western slope of the Alleghenies lies some 40 miles from the Point. From there, it’s a straight 1,500-mile shot to the Rockies. Pittsburgh not only faces but opens the great heartland of America. Before the canals and railroads, the Ohio and Mississippi river systems were the interstate highways of their day.

Pennsylvania among booziest states during holidays, NH among the least

Pennsylvanians and booze at the holidays go together like Santa Claus and his red suit, according to a couple of recent surveys. The Keystone State is one of the drunkest places in the U.S. during the holiday season, with the average Pennsylvanian quaffing four alcoholic beverages a day, according to a November survey by Sunrise House, a New Jersey-based addiction center. A different survey by Addiction-Treatment shows Pennsylvanians on average drink five consecutive days over the holidays. Both surveys included responses from 3,000 people over the age of 21. That holiday revelry, however, doesn t necessarily extend to bars and restaurants — which have been struggling for most of 2020 under pandemic-related restrictions.
