Used fire hoses from GM’s Flint Metal Center find new home at Potter Park Zoo

FLINT, MI To General Motors’ Flint Metal Center, a collection of fire hoses that required replacement served no useful purpose.
But for a colony of spider monkeys, an endangered Amur tiger and a family of North American river otters at Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, the repurposed hoses have become new toys braided for use in feeding, climbing and playing.
The Metal Center, which produces sheet metal stampings for Chevrolet and GMC Sierra trucks built at Flint Assembly, recently donated 1,500 feet of used facility fire hoses to the Lansing zoo, which reuses the hoses as “toys, puzzles and other enrichment items for the animals,” according to a news release.
