Speed may have been a factor in the head-on crash that killed five people and left a woman in critical condition in the Hamptons over the weekend.
Village of Quogue Chief of Police Christopher Isola gave an update about the investigation late Tuesday morning, July 27.
The crash happened at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday, July 24, on Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, near the intersection of Quogue Street East in the Quogue.
Police said a Nissan Maxima driven by Justin Mendez, age 22, of Brookhaven was westbound on the highway when it left its lane and drove into oncoming traffic, colliding with an eastbound Toyota Prius, driven by Uber driver Farhan Zahid, age 32, of Bay Shore.

Police said a Nissan Maxima was traveling westbound around 11:20 p.m. Saturday on Montauk Highway in Long Island when it veered into oncoming traffic and crashed head-on with a Toyota Prius.
Four of the five people traveling in the Prius, which was an Uber, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Police identified the victims as Farhan Zahid, 32, of Bay Shore, New York, Michael Farrell, 20, of Manhasset, New York, James Farrell, 25, of Manhasset, and Ryan Kiess, 25, of Manhasset. Michael and James are brothers, according to investigators.
The fifth passenger, a 22-year-old woman, was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Police said the crash happened on Saturday, July 24, on Montauk Highway in Suffolk County, near the intersection of Quogue Street East in the Village of Quogue. A westbound Nissan Maxima reportedly drove into oncoming traffic, colliding with an eastbound Toyota Prius.
Both drivers were killed in the crash. Police identified the driver of the Nissan as Justin Mendez, age 22, of Brookhaven. The driver of the Toyota was identified as Farhan Zahid, age 32, of Bay Shore, who was on duty with Uber at the time.
