The family of a man killed while walking on a Manitoba highway last year will be gathering today to walk in his memory, and is calling for people to come forward.
Albert Bradley Flett, known to everyone as Brad, was walking to a friend’s place in his home community of Peguis First Nation, the evening of February 1, 2020.
The Manitoba RCMP says that a snowmobile poker derby taking place in the community created a hub of activity- people, cars, and snowmobiles were everywhere. Brad was walking on West Road, only a short distance behind his group of friends, when at around 6:00 p.m., he was struck by what police believe to be an all-terrain vehicle. As he was behind them, Brad’s friends did not see the collision happen, but when they heard it, and realized that Brad was struck, they began administering first aid right away. The NYPD is looking for a driver who allegedly slammed his 2012 Ford E350 van into a 51-year-old man who was in the middle of helping another driver stranded on the Nassau Expressway.
The incident was reported at around 8:20 p.m. Friday on the expressway by North Hangar Road, a desolate roadway in Springfield Gardens abutting JFK International Airport, according to police. Officers from the 113th Precinct learned that the victim was standing outside his black 2005 Audi in the left lane of the expressway helping the driver of a 2001 Dodge Caravan, which broke down.
The City Council moved aggressively to rein in the NYPD on Friday, focusing its legislative ire on bigoted cops and lax discipline but also advancing a policy long-sought by street safety advocates: taking the police department out of crash investigation in favor of a new Department of Transportation unit.
The Council’s just released 12-part agenda includes the demise of the NYPD’s flawed Collision Investigation Squad and the creation of a new DOT team to investigate “all vehicle crashes involving a significant injury.” That mandate would raise the number of crash investigations from the current several hundred to several thousand, given how many crashes maim and kill every year in New York City.
