Deborah Rubin and Celine Ritter posted gold medal performances to help the Lee University women’s track & field team to a first place standing following the first day of the 2021 Gulf South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Lady Flames accumulated 35 points in three scored events to lead second place Shorter University (27) by eight points. West Georgia is in third (17) and Alabama Huntsville is fourth (15) with Mississippi College (12) and Montevallo (11) in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Wanda Dickens would admit to a bit of bias, but she thinks her late husband was the number-one fan of the Magic City Classic at least among those wearing Alabama State University’s (ASU’s) black and gold.
“He never missed a Classic that I’m aware of. He always supported it wholeheartedly,” she said of her husband, Reginald Dickens, who passed away on Nov. 24, 2020. “He took off a whole week every time they had a Classic.”
The 79th McDonald’s Magic City Classic presented by Coca-Cola will be held on Saturday, April 17, at Birmingham’s Legion Field; kickoff is at 6:30 p.m.
For the past 16 years, a group of volunteers has stood guard to ensure proper respect is paid at patriotic ceremonies and funerals for veterans and first responders.
The Patriot Guard Riders is a nationwide group formed in 2005 because of church protests at military funerals. Vietnam veteran John âCoopâ Cooper joined in July 2007 and he has been the North Alabama district ride captain six years.
His district of about 300 members goes from Cullman and Gadsden north to Tennessee, and east and west from Georgia to Mississippi.
Cooper updated the members on planned events, flag etiquette and proper conduct during a monthly meeting April 3 in Huntsville.
