자동차 기술이 발전함에 따라 크기가 작으면서도 힘과 폭발력을 갖춘 엔진이 개발되고 있다. 운전자의 눈높이도 높아지고 있어 일상 주행과 고성능의 적절한 조화를 이룬 엔진의 수요도 늘어나고 있다.
르노삼성자동차 SM6가 사용하는 TCe 300 엔진이 대표적이다. TCe 300 엔진은 르노 브랜드에서 고성능 모델을 위해 개발한 1.8리터 가솔린 터보 엔진이다. 르노의 고성능 브랜드 알핀(알피느)에 주로 사용된다.
1955년 출범한 알핀은 르노 4CV 기반의 고성능 차를 시작으로 A110, A310, 5 알핀 등을 만들었다. 특히, A110 1600S는 1973년 처음 열린 월드랠리챔피언십(WRC)에서 6회나 우승한 역사를 갖고 있다.
