Bangladesh extends strict lockdown for 5 more days

DHAKA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) The Bangladeshi government has decided to extend the ongoing nationwide strict lockdown imposed against the COVID-19 pandemic for five more days until Aug. 10. Bangladeshi Minister for Liberation War Affairs AKM Mozammel Haque announced the decision at a press conference on Tuesday after a high-level meeting held in the capital Dhaka. He said the ongoing restrictions on public and vehicular movement will be relaxed in phases from Aug. 11, and all the shops and shopping malls will reopen on the same day. Bangladesh imposed the ongoing strict lockdown from July 23 to Aug. 5 after relaxing restrictions for a week on the occasion of Eid al-Adha festival which was celebrated here on July 21.
Global Covid cases top 199 million

The overall number of global Covid cases has now surpassed the 199-million mark as the world continues to grapple against the devastating second wave of the pandemic.
According to the US-based Johns Hopkins University (JHU), the total case count reached 199,499,792 while the death toll from the virus stood at 4,245,542 on Wednesday morning.
So far, 4,142,591,204 vaccine doses have been administered across the world.
The US, which is the world s worst-hit country in terms of both cases and deaths, has so far logged 35,231,310 cases. Besides, 614,263 people have lost their lives in the US to date, as per the JHU data.

Health ministry has distanced itself from the comment made by Liberation War Affairs Minister yesterday.
The statement saying that the government will not allow anyone who is unvaccinated aged 18 or above on the streets from August 11 was not issued from the health ministry, said a press release. Health Minister Zahid Maleque said no such decision or proposal was given anywhere on behalf of the ministry, read the statement sent by Maidul Islam Prodhan, public relations officer of the health ministry.
