Uhuru consoles Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji s family [Photos]

Uhuru on Monday afternoon led the Kenyan nation in bidding farewell to Senator Haji whose body was interred at Lang ata Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi County.  Speaking at the burial ceremony that was also attended by Deputy President Dr William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the President eulogized Senator Haji as an outstanding leader who served the country with commitment throughout his life.

[Boniface Okendo, Standard] Former Cabinet Minister and Garissa Senator Mohamed Yusuf Haji has been laid to rest at Lang ata Muslim Cemetery in Nairobi.  The 80-year-old Haji died at the Aga Khan University Hospital early Monday morning after a long illness. He was buried after 4pm prayers at the South C Mosque in Nairobi. Friends and family of the late Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji gather at his home in Riverside 104, Nairobi. In his condolences, President Uhuru eulogised the veteran politician, who until his death was the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce, as a dependable Kenyan leader and patriot.

In his condolence message, the President eulogised the veteran politician, who until his death was the co-chair of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) Taskforce, as a dependable Kenyan leader and patriot. “It is very unfortunate that we have lost such a dependable, solid and highly accomplished Kenyan leader,” President Kenyatta said. “Mzee Haji was a highly respected leader and elder whose wisdom, deep knowledge of the Kenyan society and long experience as a public administrator enabled him to serve the country in various leadership roles with distinction for many years,” he said. The President said the death of Senator Haji was a big blow to the country especially in the BBI constitutional reform process where his leadership shall be dearly missed.

Senator Yusuf Haji dies

According to family members, the senator was flown to Turkey in December and returned to the country on Saturday night and admitted to the hospital. In September last year, the legislator underwent a five-hour operation at the same hospital after he slipped and dislocated his hip while at home in Garissa. Mr Haji was the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force and is the father of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Yusuf Haji. Mr Haji joined Kenya’s provincial administration in 1960 as a district officer (DO) and rose through the ranks to become one of the country’s most powerful provincial commissioners.
