County Health Executive Clare Wanyama said the symptoms were overlapping in both diseases, and therefore during the pandemic, there should be high index of suspicion. “Malaria is endemic disease in the region and because of increased numbers among those testing positive for the virus, Covid-19 is mandatory to avoid spreading the disease at community level,” said Wanyama. She said the county is using Prevention, Retention and Contingency (PRC) and rapid antigen testing. However, due to the high number of tests performed daily, the PRC machine requires regular maintenance and repair. It is currently not functioning. Samples collected through target testing are taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) or Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) in Kisumu for tests.

Apr 21, 2021 The study aimed to investigate how to improve access to family planning and address the unmet contraceptive need in postpartum women by determining contraceptive implant uptake predictors in the immediate postpartum period. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among women who had given birth up to 6 d earlier at the Riley Mother and Baby Hospital, part of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya. Participants were systematically sampled and data collected using pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaires. Statistical analyses were performed to determine associations between variables. The study comprised 353 women. More than 76% had received secondary education or above; 9% were HIV-positive. Most had heard of the contraceptive implant, and almost half had ever used it before their current pregnancy.
