Posted: February 10, 2021 Zoom public hearing set for Lumberton area rezoning The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) board of directors Feb. 5 passed the first two readings of rezoning and official community plan (OCP) amendment bylaws that could allow the subdivision of a Lumberton area property. The proposed OCP designation change is from RR, Rural Resource to LH, Large Holdings and the proposed zoning designation change is from RR-60, Rural Resource Zone to RR-2, Rural Residential (Small Holding) Zone. “Although the proposal has some consistency with parcel sizes in the surrounding area, OCP policies identify RR, Rural Resource designated land as intended to be retained for low density uses. Sandwiched between the railway tracks and Highway 3 the proposed RR-2 zone will allow new residential development in a less than ideal location and likely require additional highway accesses,” a RDEK planning department’s request for decision report outlined.

Posted: January 31, 2021 Precipitation to continue into Monday morning Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting’s meteorological service is predicting variable precipitation of light flurries to snow-rain showers continuing into Monday morning (Feb. 1). Cranbrook, Moyie and Columbia Valley: Scattered periods of light snow showers lingering into Sunday morning mostly in areas south of Kimberley with amounts one to four cm by daybreak Sunday.  The snow becomes more widespread Sunday afternoon with two to six cm by daybreak Monday while Panorama receives five to 10 cm. Elk Valley area: Periods of snow into Sunday morning with amounts of two four cm by daybreak Sunday and southwest winds gusting from 30 to 50 km/h. Later Sunday morning, snow becomes more widespread with one to four cm by Monday morning  and higher amounts expected above 1,000 m.

Posted: January 27, 2021 Internet speed tests still available for some residents There is still time for residents in select East Kootenay communities to be able to test their internet speed courtesy Columbia Basin Trust. Panorama Mountain Resort, Wilmer and Moyie area residents are invited to test internet speed, as well residents in Golden, Kicking Horse, Upper Donald, Nicholson, Wynndel, Slocan, New Denver, Silverton, Rosebery, Nakusp, Salmo, Ross Spur and Valemount. The Trust asks residents to take this internet speed test before Sunday, January 31. “By taking the online speed test, you are providing specific data about the true state of connectivity in your area. This information determines eligibility for federal connectivity granting programs. Certain areas of the Columbia Basin are showing as meeting service expectations; however, that is not what we heard from you. If you live in one of these communities, take the speed test by January 31.”
