Prosecutors say more than 6,000 felony cases still open dating back to 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. – Nearly four years after a deadly crash in Winter Park took the lives of two young women, their families are still demanding justice.
Geena Pabarue and Keisha Parales, both 23, were killed.
Fonner was hospitalized, and he was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide.
Now, nearly four years later, his case has yet to go to trial in Orange County.
“Our life stopped four years ago almost four years ago and everyone else’s life kept going,” said Pabarue’s sister Everyis Lopez.

A defense lawyer was praised as a hero after he stepped in to help a prosecutor who was attacked Monday afternoon outside the Orange County Courthouse.
Assistant Public Defender Andrew Crabbs said a man jumped from behind the bushes at the edge of the courthouse parking lot about 5:30 p.m. and latched onto Assistant State Attorney Dayna Clarke’s back, wrapping his arms around her neck. The two fell to the ground, and Crabbs, who said he was the only one there, grabbed the man’s wrists and tried to pry his arms from her neck. The man eventually let go and ran off.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – An Orange County deputy shot and killed 22-year-old Salaythis Melvin outside the Florida Mall in August 2020. It became one of six cases where officers used deadly force inherited by State Attorney Monique Worrell when she was sworn-in in January of this year.
“It’s interesting to state that when we walked in there were six, so on day one I was already behind,” Worrell told News 6 said.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Former state attorney Aramis Ayala is exploring a run for U.S. Senate in an attempt to flip one of Florida’s two seats currently held by Republicans.
Ayala, a Democrat, was previously the state attorney for the Ninth Judicial District of Florida which includes Orange and Osceola counties. She did not run for re-election this past November and now Monique Worrell holds the top prosecutor seat.
The former prosecutor announced she is considering a run for U.S. Senate in a video posted to a new website, armaisayala.com.
